Area
What is Area in Math?
Area is the size of a two-dimensional surface.

Calculation of the area of a square whose length and width are 1 metre would be:
1 metre x 1 metre = 1 m2

and therefore, another square with different sides can be calculated as:
3 metres x 2 metres = 6 m2.

"8 square meters" is written as 8 m2
"8 square feet" is written as 8 ft2

Area (square miles, including water) Illinois 57,914 sq mi What is the unit of measure for surface area?
Thus areas can be measured in square metres (m2), square centimetres (cm2), square millimetres (mm2), square kilometres (km2), square feet (ft2), square yards (yd2), square miles (mi2), and so forth.

How do you find the area?
Perimeter is 1-dimensional and is measured in linear units such as inches, feet or meters. Area is 2-dimensional: it has a length and a width. Area is measured in square units such as square inches, square feet or square meters. To find the area of a rectangle, multiply the length by the width.

1. How many square millimetres are there in a square centimetre?
1 cm = 10 mm, so 1 cm2 = 10 × 10 = 100 mm2.

2. How many square centimetres are there in a square metre?
1 m = 100 cm, so 1 m2 = 100 × 100 = 10,000 cm2.

3. How many square metres are there in a square centimetre?
1 cm = 0·01 m, so 1 cm2 = 0·01 × 0·01 = 0·0001 cm2.

Areas of plane shapes

For many shapes there are ways to calculate the area - for example the area of a circle. These are listed below with links to pages that explain each in more depth.

Areas on the coordinate plane

If you know the x,y coordinates of the vertices of a shape, there are ways to calculate the area from those coordinates. See Polygons on the coordinate plane.
