Poisoning
What are examples of case reports of poisoning?

Example Number 1.

This happened in 1986 inside a hotel restaurant near an international airport. An 18-year-old male ingested contaminated food provided by the hotel restaurant. It was verified that, within 2 to 5 minutes, the food had a horrible taste. Within 5 to 10 minutes, the person was experiencing nausea, vomiting, and a severe headache. The airport hotel supervisor stated that the individual could not leave and no doctor can be brought in. The individual realized he had been intentionally poisoned. He could not utter any words because of vocal cord paralysis. He immediately went to a faucet to drink a lot of water. He induced vomiting and brought out that he had ingested. He survived. One doctor said that if a person suffers from food poisoning, the person should immediately drink lots of water and induce vomiting so that poison comes out. Another says not to ingest water and induce vomiting. What is your stand on this situation on or after January 22, 2024?

Poison is anything that kills or injures through its chemical actions.

How can poisons enter the human body?
Poisons can enter the human body:
1. By being swallowed (ingested)
2. By breathing
3. Through the skin
4. By IV/injection

Venom from a snake bite or insect bite.
Poisoning is not to be confused with envenomation.
Some locations consider poisoning is not to be confused with envenomation.

Exposure to radiation is considered a separate entity.

What are the types of poisoning?
Foods
Drugs or chemicals

What are the symptoms of poisoning?
Possible symptoms of poisoning:
Nausea and/or vomiting
Throwing up
Trouble breathing
Confusion, sleepiness, or being unconscious
Belly pain
Diarrhea
Rash
Redness or sores around the mouth
Dry mouth
Drooling or foaming at the mouth
Trouble breathing
Dilated pupils (bigger than normal) or constricted pupils (smaller than normal)
Confusion
Fainting
Shaking or seizures

Signs and symptoms of poisoning are so wide and variable that there is no easy way to classify them.

Some poisons enlarge the pupils; others shrink them.
Some result in excessive drooling; others dry the mouth and skin.
Some speed up the heart; others slow the heart.
Some increase the breathing rate; others slow it.
Some cause pain; others are painless.
Some cause hyperactivity; others cause drowsiness. Confusion is often seen with these symptoms.

What things are poisonous?
Almost anything can be harmful in large amounts.
Even prescription and over-the-counter medicines can be dangerous if you overdose.

Poisoning: What is the treatment?
Let me explain.

Find: What type of poison is implicated?
What is the antidote for this poison?

What is an antidote?
An antidote is the cure for a poison.

Where are listed antidotes?
Acetylcysteine for acetaminophen poisoning
Activated charcoal for most poisons
Atropine for organophosphates and carbamates
Digoxin immune fab for digoxin toxicity
Dimercaprol for arsenic, gold, or inorganic mercury poisoning
Flumazenil for benzodiazepine overdose
Methylene blue for drug-induced methemoglobinemia
Naloxone for opioid overdose
Pralidoxime for poisoning by anti-cholinesterase nerve agents
Dialysis for acute poisonings

With whom do you communicate if you need an antidote for a specific poison?

Metformin
Acetaminophen
Valproic acid

Poisoning and substance use disorders are connected.
The poisoning can occur by other drugs or chemicals that are not included in the 10 categories of substance use disorders on or before January 22, 2024. An advanced toxicology lab is essential to answer this question.

Was this situation due to poisoning?
Yes or no?

What was the poisoning by?
Poisoning by or due to a specific drug or chemical.

What is toxicology?
Toxicology is the study of the effects of chemical, biological, and physical agents on living organisms, particularly humans.

Toxicology is a scientific discipline, overlapping with biology, chemistry, pharmacology, and medicine, that involves the study of the adverse effects of chemical substances on living organisms and the practice of diagnosing and treating exposures
to toxins and toxicants.
