“The rose oil is used both as fragrance and flavour. It is used as an essential ingredient in perfumes and confectioneries. It is also used in several valuable products like cosmetics and scent and for flavoring edible items and drinks.” Experts say multiple use of this product makes it a commercially viable product. “There is a demand for several thousand kilograms of rose oil in the international market, where it is sold at very high prices. But unfortunately, barring three or four entrepreneurs, nobody in the private sector here has so far come forward for rose cultivation,” said Dr Zain-ul-Abidin, president Kashmir Chamber of Food Processing Industry (KCOFI). To mention, the Regional Research Laboratory (RRL), formerly Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP), has been growing several medicinal and aromatic plants on its 1200 kanal farm at Bonira, Pulwama belt, for past around a couple of decades and prime among the crops is the rose. Why do perfumes smell different on different people? Your own body chemistry affects how differerent notes react on your skin. Anything that affects the “natural” smell of your skin, such as stress, hormonal changes, your current diet or medications, might change how a perfume smells on you. For a more detailed explanation, see here. How can I make my perfume last longer on my skin? All other things being equal, perfumes evaporate more rapidly from dry skin, so the best way to make fragrance last longer is to use a relatively heavy body lotion or cream. Some people like to buy the “matching” cream for their fragrance, but you can also use an unscented cream like Cetaphil, or try petroleum jelly or jojoba oil. You might also try a light mist to your hair, which is said to hold scent longer than skin. What are Eau De Toilette, Eau De Parfum, etc? These terms refer to the strength of the fragrance, or more specifically, to how much high grade alcohol and/or water has been added to the fragrance oils. Parfum (generally the most concentrated form you can buy) has 15-25% perfume oil dissolved in alcohol. Any mixture with a lower proportion of oil to alcohol is an eau (water). Eau Fraiche (Usually 3% or less perfume oil) Eau de cologne (2 – 5% perfume oil) Eau de Toilette (4 – 10% perfume oil) Eau de parfum (8 – 15% perfume oil) Soie de Parfum (15 – 18% perfume oil) PARFUM or Perfume (15 – 25% — also sometimes referred to as extract or extrait) Perfume oil (15-30% perfume oil in an oil rather than alcohol base) You may also see the term Parfum de Toilette. Most companies use this term to describe a concentration that is either the same as Eau De Parfum, or between Eau De Parfum and Parfum. Other companies use the term to describe an Eau De Toilette concentration. To further confuse matters, some companies use different notes, or different proportions of notes, in the different forms of fragrance they offer. In addition, some companies reserve costly fragrance oils for their parfum, and use synthetic substitutes in lighter concentrations. What are top, middle, and base notes? Top notes provide the first scent impression of a fragrance once it has been applied to the skin. They are usually lighter, more volatile aromas that evaporate readily. Their scent usually lingers for between 5 and 30 minutes. Middle notes, sometimes referred to as “heart notes”, make up the body of the blend. They may be evident from the start, but will usually take 10-30 minutes to fully develop on the skin. They are the notes that classify the fragrance family (floral, oriental, chypre, etc, see below). Base Notes are those with the greatest molecular weight. They last the longest, and are also important as fixatives, that is, they help slow down the evaporation rates of the lighter notes, giving the fragrance holding power. Common base notes include oakmoss, patchouli, woods, musk and vanilla. A fragrance which does not have traditional top, middle and base notes is usually described as “linear”. What are the “fragrance families”? These are “aroma groupings” of related scents. There is more than one classification system in use, but many list 7 major families: Greens, Florals, Aldehydics, Chypre, Oriental, Fougère & Tobacco/Leather. Some listings of the major fragrance families can be found at: Fragrance Families (pdf at Leffingwell) Parfums Raffy Fragrance Guide Fragrances of the World 2000 (at Art et Parfum) How long can I keep my perfume before it “turns”? Some industry experts say that perfume should be replaced every year, but properly stored, perfumes should last much longer. Most perfumes will keep several years, some will keep many more years than that. To store perfume properly, keep it away from heat and light. A dark closet or a covered box is best. Also avoid direct exposure to air. Splash bottles, which expose the fragrance to air every time they are opened, are problematic. Consider decanting into a smaller atomizer for regular use. If you apply perfume directly from a bottle stopper, wipe the stopper with a clean, lint free cloth before replacing it in the bottle. How many milliliters are in an ounce? Here is a quick conversion chart: 100 ml = 3.3 or 3.4 oz 50 ml = 1.7 oz 30 ml = 1 oz 15 ml = 1/2 oz 10 ml = 1/3 oz 7.5 ml = 1/4 oz 5 ml = 1/6 oz 3.7 ml = 1/8 oz = 1 dram Note that all of these are approximate; strictly speaking, 1/2 oz is 14.787 ml. A standard perfume sample is in a 1/32 oz (1 ml) vial. You can see a picture showing sizes of standard perfume bottles in the article on decanting (scroll down). What is the difference between essential oil and perfume oil? Essential oils are volatile, fragrant liquids extracted from plant leaves, bark, wood, stems, flowers, seeds, buds, roots, resins and petals, usually through steam distillation. In other words, they are raw materials that can be used to create perfumes. They are highly concentrated and apart from a few exceptions, should not be used directly on the skin, although they can be diluted in a carrier oil, such as jojoba, for such use. Why do perfumes cost so much? There are many reasons for the high cost of perfume. Advertising, packaging, and the type of distribution channels used by perfume manufacturers account for most of the cost. Fragrance companies advertise perfumes in monthly publications. It costs about $32,000.00 for a one page ad in Vogue magazine. Industry sources say that Calvin Klein spent approximately $6 million to advertise their fragrance Eternity. Manufacturers pay premium prices for designer bottles, boxes, and display cartons. Some of the world's finest bottle designers charge more than $100,000.00. Department stores typically mark perfume 60% to 100%. Customers pay for these costs. How can Perfume Originals fragrances be so reasonable? By eliminating the fancy packaging, the high cost of advertising, and marketing our fragrances directly to the customers. How do I find the right fragrance for me? The best way to find your perfume is by testing the fragrance on your skin and living with the fragrance awhile. Only then will you know if the fragrance is right for the occasion. Perfume Originals gives you the freedom to chose from 26 women's perfumes and 13 men's colognes. We have fragrances to meet all of your fragrance demands. The Guide to Fine Perfumes is an excellent source of fragrance information. How many fragrances can be tried without becoming numbed? A variety of different fragrance types is less fatiguing to the sense of smell. When perfumes are very different you can try five to six; when they are similar, only two to three. Heavier scents tire your nose more quickly so when sampling always begin with lighter scents. Can a fragrance smell differently on different people? Yes, fragrances can smell differently on different people. Everyone has their own body chemistry and individual smell. A fragrance scent depends on both the condition of the skin and the individual's diet. Can spicy food effect the scent of a perfume? No, the scent of a perfume does not change. Spicy food can change the odor of the skin, thereby effecting the overall odor effect of a perfume Why am I not aware of my fragrance after I have worn it for awhile? The sense of smell becomes quickly fatigued. After a period of smelling a fragrance you become used to it and may not be able to smell the scent. The scent is still there and is very strong for others. Can a perfume influence moods? Yes, various studies show that fragrances can influence moods. Some studies show the impact scents have on moods may come partly from memories they invoke. Therefore, a mood change may vary from person to person or at different times. A pleasant fragrance can both soothe and stimulate. Are natural substances better than synthetics? Not necessarily; synthetics are of equal value to the perfumer. There are extremely expensive natural components and reasonable synthetics and vice versa. Some natural synthetic odor components are more stable than the natural ingredients. Therefore, they are more desirable to the perfumer. Does Perfume Originals use synthetic ingredients in their products? Yes, Perfume Originals uses synthetic aromatic ingredients in the composition of their fragrance items. Does Perfume Originals use natural animalic substances in their products? No, Perfume Originals uses synthetic animalic ingredients in the production of the fragrance items that contain animalic notes. How can you chose a fragrance for someone else? A good rule of thumb is to stay with a classic fragrance. A fragrance that has been on the market for decades is not as risky as new fragrances on the market. The age of the recipient can also influence your choice. If you are purchasing for a women of college age, Potion, Eternal, or Desire may be appropriate. If you are purchasing for a more mature woman, Amber, Opoponax, or Innocence may be a good choice. Lighter floral fragrances are acceptable to almost everyone. Heavier perfumes with oriental notes are more risky. To guarantee the correct fragrance, give a gift certificate and sample the fragrances at a later time. How long does a perfume keep? This depends on their storage. The ideal storage conditions are room temperature out of direct sunlight. Do not place near extreme heat or light. Extreme heat may cause a fragrance to oxidize or change its odor. When stored properly a perfume will last almost indefinitely. Product note: When transporting your fragrances, keep them in a cooler to prevent excessive heat. Heat builds quickly inside a vehicle. Liquids expand and contract with temperature changes. Excessive heat may cause the bottles to break. Is there any benefit to storing perfumes in a refrigerator? No, the ideal storage condition for perfume is room temperature. Should a perfume be dabbed or sprayed? This depends on your personal preference. Spraying gives a more even distribution. When dabbed, drops of perfume can go to waste. How many substances does a perfume contain? Perfumes may be composed of fifty, one hundred, or one thousand ingredients; the sky is the limit. There are no set amounts. The number if ingredients used does not determine the quality or cost of a perfume. Can perfume leave stains on clothes? Normally, they don't because most of the ingredients evaporate without leaving a trace. We do not recommend the spraying of perfumes directly on clothes because some fabrics may stain. If stains occur, they can usually come out when washed. Always apply your fragrance items before dressing. Can perfume spoil? Yes. When a perfume becomes thick, its color changes drastically, and there is a sour smell upon opening, this means the perfume has deteriorated. How much, and what type of perfume should I wear? A good rule of thumb is less is best. Your perfume should never dominate your surroundings. We suggest a light fresh floral fragrance for the warmer months. Increased body temperature causes perfumes to expand and the scent becomes stronger. During winter the opposite holds true. Build your fragrance wardrobe. Choose perfumes to meet your moods and the occasions. How should a fragrance be applied? Apply directly to pulse points--inside the wrist, behind the ears, at the temples, behind the knees, the back of the neck, the cleavage area, between the toes, ankles, and thighs. Does a fragrance last longer on moist or dry skin? Perfumes cling to moist skin; they thrive when worn on emollient skin. The warmth of a body enables the fragrance to warm thereby releasing its true beauty. Dry skin lacks the necessary oils to hold fragrances and can even distort the scent. If you have dry skin, use a cap full of Perfume Originals Perfumed Body Oil after your shower. Product tip--put the body oil in a plastic spray bottle and spray or mist on. Then gently pat your skin dry. Do not rub your skin with a towel. Rubbing robs your skin of moisture and precious oils. Seal moisture into your skin with the hand and body lotion. Now apply your perfume. What type of alcohol does Perfume Originals use in their perfumes and colognes? Perfume Originals uses SD 40 (standard--denatured) alcohol. What does the term layering mean? Layering is the process of applying fragrance items with the same scent. Why should fragrances be layered? To avoid fragrance clash, that is the wearing of several different scents together. Shampoo, cream rinse, deodorant, etc. all have their own fragrance. Depending upon what you use, the conflicting scents can detract from the one scent you want to stress, that of your perfume. In one day you may come in contact with as few as 10 or as many as 30 different scents. Therefore layer your fragrances using Perfume Originals products to compliment your overall fragrance wardrobe. Use our essence oils to scent all of your beauty products and fragrance items. Perfume Originals essence oils and matching fragrance products are the key to your overall fragrance wardrobe. How do I layer my fragrances? First choose the fragrance you want to wear. Next scent your fragrance items, shampoo, cream rinse, hair spray, deodorant, etc. with the essence oil of your choice. Once you scent the items, begin your day with a fragrance bath or shower using our bubble bath/shower gel. If your skin needs additional moisture add body oil to your bath water, or apply after showering. Product note--put the body oil in a plastic spray bottle and apply after baths or showers. Seal the moisture into your skin with the hand and body lotion. Next, apply perfume to your pulse points. These areas include the inside of your wrists, elbow area, shoulders, behind your knees, cleavage area, below the adam's apple, behind the ear, and your torso. Fragrances rise, so don't overlook your legs and feet. What does the term "fragrance life" mean? The composition of a fragrance is of many different ingredients, each of which varies in scent and staying power. Different ingredients come to life at different stages. The industry refers to the stages as notes. The top note is the initial impact of a scent on the sense of smell. the middle note, or heart, develops a few minutes later. The base note, or foundation provides the most lasting effects of a fragrance. * What is the difference between cologne, eau de toilette, parfum, etc...? o Simple. The concentrations are different. Eau de cologne is the least concentrated form of a fragrance, then comes the eau de toilette, followed by the eau de parfum, and finally the most concentrated, the parfum. * What is a "nose"? o A nose is a person who creates fragrances. There was a time when the job of perfume-maker was handed down from father to son but times have changed and now there are several schools dedicated to the science of perfume-making. At this time only three major French perfume-makers (Chanel, Guerlain, and Jean Patou) have their own in-house blender. Underneath a "nose" at work at the perfume organ. * Is it true that fragrances change scent on different people? o Yes. Each of us has our own unique body chemistry based on our genes, skin type, hair color, and even the type of lifestyle we lead and the environment in which we live in. So it is important not to purchase a fragrance because you smelled it in a magazine ad or on someone else. Try it on your own skin to see how it reacts with your own body chemistry. * As one gets older does the sense of smell diminish? o Yes. As we age our sense of smell slowly begins to diminish. As a result some older individuals apply more fragrance than needed. * How long will a fragrance last on me? o Fragrances are designed to last about 4 hours or so. Some people may notice that a particular fragrance lasts all day but by then it will not smell as it's supposed to. You must reapply once or twice a day. * Do I apply fragrance all over the body? o Yes. If a fragrance is only applied to the neck or behind the ears the fragrance will rise and disappear. It is important to apply a fragrance all over the body to ensure the scent lasts. * How does skin type play a role? o Oily skin holds scents much more than dry skin. So those with dry skin need to reapply more often. * Is it important to change fragrances according to the different seasons of the year? o Yes, since heat increases the intensity of a fragrance. There are certain fragrances that are more appropriate for summer and other stronger scents that would be better for winter use. A good guideline to follow is to wear lighter scents in the summer and stronger in the winter. Citrus scents are perfect for summer while orientals are better for winter. * How does the color of your hair make a difference? o Yes + Blondes with a fair skin will be happiest with long-lasting multi-floral creations. Their skin is often dry causing fragrances that are too subtle to evaporate rapidly. + Brunettes usually have medium-to-dark skin which contains natural oils, allowing scents to last longer. Dramatic Orientals are often favorites. + Redheads have extremely fair and delicate skin which may be incompatible with fragrances which have predominant green notes. * How long can I keep my fragrance stored? o Fragrances don't last forever. There are certain precautions though that will ensure the quality of the fragrance. o Keep the bottle in a dry, dark place. o Heat can also destroy a fragrance so keep it from extreme temperatures. o Colognes and eau de toilettes (not parfum) may be kept in the refrigerator in order to maintain their freshness. o Fragrances usually last 3 years from the date they were manufactured, not the day you buy it. o Certain clearance centers which I won't name but everyone knows who they are carry bottles that are at least 2 or 3 years old. o Buy from department stores and reputable perfumeries to ensure the quality of the fragrance. How can I make my scent last longer? What is the difference between a splash and a spray? Why do some men wear Cologne, and others prefer to wear After Shave? Why does fragrance contain alcohol? What are the differences between After Shave lotion, After Shave Gel, and After Shave Balm? What is shower gel? What do fragrance notes refer to? How can I keep my fragrance from going bad? What are the Fragrance Abbreviations? What is a tester? What does "unboxed" mean? What is the difference between Perfume, Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, and Eau de Cologne? The differences are simply a matter of the amount or concentration of oils in the fragrance. These oils are called "juice." The highest concentration of "juice" is in perfume (or parfum). Next would be Eau de Parfum, then Eau de Toilette, and finally Eau de Cologne. Actually, Eau de Toilette and Eau de Cologne are generally interchangeable, particularly in Men's fragrances. After Shave has the least amount of oils. The higher the concentration of "juice" the longer your fragrance will last, and the less you need to apply. Why do some fragrances seem to last much longer than others? People with dry skin usually find their fragrance holding time shorter than those with oily skin because oily skin has more natural moisture to hold in the fragrance. PH levels (amount of acidity in our skin) also varies slightly from person to person. Our individual levels of PH will determine how each ingredient in a fragrance will react. How can I make my scent last longer? Fragrance lasts longer on some people than on others because of differences in our skin (oily or dry) and in our PH levels. To achieve a longer effect, try layering your fragrance. Using the fragrance bath gel, (if the company offers one), then the moisturizer or powder, and then the Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum or Eau de Cologne, will usually have a longer lasting effect. Also, apply your fragrance low on the body, as well as behind your ears and on your neck, so that the scent rises and you won't lose it as quickly. A light spray on the hair can last all day. What is the difference between a splash and a spray? There is absolutely no difference in the fragrance. The difference is in the application only. However, a spray bottle, being ostensibly sealed all the time, may actually have a longer shelf life. Making the decision between spray and splash is entirely a matter of personal preference. Why do some men wear Cologne, and others prefer to wear After Shave? Cologne's fragrance will generally last much longer than After Shave. However, many men choose to wear both. The fragrance lasts longer, you can use less of each, and you get the facial benefit of an After Shave. Why does fragrance contain alcohol? Alcohol makes the fragrance emanate from your skin. Without alcohol, you would be the only person who knew you were wearing any fragrance at all. What are the differences between After Shave Lotion, After Shave Gel, and After Shave Balm? After Shave Lotion will usually sting as well as help close the pores after shaving. After Shave Balm is actually soothing to the skin. After Shave Gel also soothes the skin, but cools the skin as well and relieves razor burn. What is shower gel? Shower gel is soap in a different form. It is made for use by both men and women, foams up well and leaves your chosen fragrance on the skin. It then enhances your cologne or perfume and the fragrance will last much longer. What do fragrance notes refer to? Fragrances are comprised of many different scents, these scents are called "notes." Top notes are very light and last just a few minutes (5-10 minutes). Middle notes become apparent in about 15 minutes after application. These can last up to an hour or more. Bottom notes are the heavier ingredients. These last the longest, usually for several hours. How can I keep my fragrance from going bad? Keep all fragrance in a cool, dry area, and away from windows as sunlight can unbalance the various ingredients. An opened bottle should be kept in its box to insure a longer shelf life. What are the Fragrance Abbreviations? EDT: Eau de Toilette EDP: Eau de Parfum Col: Cologne C/S: Cologne Spray A/S: After-Shave Spy: Spray Sp: Spray B/L: Body Lotion Bdy: Body B/P: Body Powder D/P: Dusting Powder Dust: Dusting Pwdr: Powder B/C: Body Cream B/G: Bath Gel Conc: Concentrate P/S: Purse Spray What is a tester? Testers are genuine, authentic, fresh and 100% original. Testers contain the same original fragrance and are used by department stores to help promote a particular fragrance. Testers are made by the manufacturer and come in a plain box, and sometimes without the fancy cap. What does “unboxed” mean? Unboxed items are genuine, authentic, fresh and 100% original. Sometimes the outer box gets damaged in transit so we remove it. Unboxed items always contain the same original fragrance as the boxed versions. http://www.nstperfume.com/perfume-faq/ http://www.eimi.com/perfumeoriginals/perfumefaq.htm http://www.ageless.co.za/fragrances.htm http://www.scentspain.com/faqs.html http://www.fragrancenet.com/f/net/faqs.html
