Print Advertising Questions What choices do I have for advertising? There are 3 categories this course covers; Print Advertising, TV advertising, and radio advertising. What does print advertising include? Print advertising includes advertising in newspapers, magazines, the internet, brochures, etc. Why is it important to choose an audience? Choosing an audience will help you to decide what kind of an advertisment you will need. It will also help you choose what to include in an ad, and how to approach the whole process. What do I need to consider when choosing my audience? Some questions you should ask yourself when choosing an audience are: Where does your audience live? What are their interests? Are you trying to sell to a particular town, county, state, country or all over the world? What should I include in my advertisement? You need to include any information you think your consumer would want you know. You also want to include stuff that will catch the readers interest. You might want to include pictures of some of the products you want to sell. Your headline is very important in catching the readers interest. Remember, the more people that actually look at your ad, the more possible consumers there are. Why is the headline so important? The headline is the first thing the reader will probably notice. First impressions are important. You need to include catchy words. Where can I get ideas on how to make my ads better? The best thing to do is to grab a newspaper, and sit down with the ads in it, and make a list for all of them of what you liked and disliked about the ad. What was the first thing you noticed? What was the last thing you saw? Did the headline interest you? Ask your friends what they think of your ad. Take it to a newspaper, and see if they can look at it, and give you ideas on how to make it better. If I chose to use brochures, how could I get them to the consumer? You could mail them, have them put into newspapers, you could post them at bulletain boards (if you post them, make sure you have permission from the owner of the bulletain board), or you could keep them in the store. You can chose a combination of these, or use your imagination? If I choose to mail my brochure, how do I know who to mail them to? You have a few choices about where to send your brochures to. You could send them to everyone in the town you are located in, or you could keep a guest book, and mail only to the people in it. In your guest book, you could have a section for your guests to list other people who would be interested in recieving mail from you. When you create your mail, be sure that your brochure won't be percieved as junk mail. What expenses are involved with publishing a brochure? When publishing a brochure, you need to think about the cost of making copies, the cost of mailing the brochures, if you take that route. You could pssibly put the brochures in a newspaper, and that will cost you money. If you decided to buy a mailing list, that obviously costs money. What expenses are involved with internet advertising? The main expense, for advertising on the internet, is the server space. This is an ongoing expense, because you will have to pay for it monthly or anually, or whatever your contract is. Another expense that you may have is the cost of having a company/person to create your web page for you. You will also need to advertise that you have a web page, because when people generally use the world wide web, they tend to do look for specific information, and not for anything they can find. Can I hire someone to create my web page for me? Yes you can hire someone to create your page for you. You have a couple of options, as to who you hire, you could hire a company to do it, or you could find an individual person to do it for you. Whatever you choose, ask to see a couple of web pages created by them. How can I put pictures of my products on my web page? To put pictures on the web, you need to scan the images into the computer, using a software package designed for scanning, and a scanner. A software package I recommend is Adobe PhotoShop, because it allows you to crop anything you don't want to appear in the photo before you scan the image. You can also touch the picture up in anyway, using PhotoShop. Then save the picture as a .gif or .jpeg, and put your picture in your server account. I have a web page up and running, but no one seems to be visiting. Did you advertise your web page? People don't turn on their computer, and have your page automatically come up. You have to let them know its there, by sending out brochures, or in a newspaper ad. You can also become a sponsor of someone else's web page. How does it work if I become a "sponsor" for someone else's web page? If you sponsor someone elses web page, you pay them a fee, and they put a link to your page on theirs. I suggest you find people who's pages are related to the stuff you are selling. For instance if you are selling bag pipes, you will want sponsor a page about Scotland, music, etc., not a page about dirt racing.
