What do I need to connect to the Internet?
How do I connect to the Internet?
How do I find what computer modem I have?

What do I need to connect to the Internet?

To connect to the Internet you need the following four things:
1. A computer
2. A modem and telephone line (if you are using dial up access)
A data line of some sort (if you are not using dial up access)
3. An Internet browser (software) and software to connect you to the ISP
4. An account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP) Souvenirs

These things work together in the following way:
The Computer is essential.
The Modem is necessary if you are using a telephone line to access the Internet. It translates the language that computers talk into a language that can travel across the phone lines, and vice versa.

The ISP is your gateway to the Internet. You access the ISP over the phone line, and the ISP will connect you to the Internet. The ISP provides you with e-mail and access to the Internet.

You need an Internet service provider (ISP) and some hardware to connect to the Internet:
* ISP. An ISP provides access to the Internet. You sign up for an account with an ISP just as you do for telephone service or utilities.

* Hardware. For a broadband connection such as Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) or cable, you need a DSL or cable modem. This is usually included as part of the start-up hardware from your ISP when you sign up for a broadband account. For a dial-up connection, you need a dial-up modem. Many computers come with this type of modem already installed.
