Urology

What are the most common urological emergencies?
Urinary Retention in Men

What is the most common cause of urinary retention in men?
Benign prostate hyperplasia.
In most cases, an indwelling Foley catheter is the treatment.
Experience has shown most urinary retention in adult males due to benign prostate hyperplasia can be treated with a Foley catheter, antibiotics, or anti-inflammatory, depending on the situation.

Do not go ahead with surgery.
You should prefer to have an indwelling catheter with occasional removal of the catheter than opting for surgery.
In most cases, removal of an indwelling catheter after a certain period will allow the patient to pass urine normally.
