Well, I'm not going to do it for you, but I'll explain what the two things are...that way you're prepared to do your own homework :-) A linking verb links two nouns/pronouns, with the first noun being the subject and the second renaming the first. Example: Rome is a city. Rome is the subject, is is the linking verb, and city is a predicate noun - renaming the subject. *When a verb is a linking verb, it will have a predicate noun (which renames the subject), not a direct object. Action verb, or transitive active verb, describes an action and has both a subject and a direct object. Example: Billy hit the girl. Billy is the subject, hit is the action (or transitive active) verb, and girl is the direct object. Billy hit, and the girl is who got hit. This verb has a direct object (who or what received the action of the verb), not a predicate noun. That's the difference between the two - linking verbs "link" a subject and predicate noun, and action verbs describe what happened between a subject and a direct object. |
