Sui gas / Natural gas
Producing formations: Sui Main Limestone, Sui
Current production of gas: 394×10^6 cu ft/d
Estimated gas in place: 12,170×10^9 cu ft
1952

A discovery of huge natural gas field near the present day town, Sui, in the province of Balochistan. Sui gas field is located in Bugti tribal territory of Balochistan about 650 km north of Karachi. Drilling at Sui well No.1 commenced on 10th October, 1951 by the Burmah Oil Co. (Pakistan Concessions) Ltd. Natural gas was encountered at a depth of around 4,000 feet. However, in search of oil, drilling was continued to a final depth of 10,049 feet. About that time PPL had come into existence.

The Sui gas discovered in 1952 is today, the second name of natural gas. The gas reserves discovered in Sui, were to the tune of 9.625 trillion cubic feet.

Today the Sui gas field produces around 660 MMscf of natural gas daily from 82 wells completed during 55 years of production. It is not only the pioneer gas producing field, it is indeed the biggest.

Exploration

The saga of drilling operations which commenced in 1952 from Sui, continues today in the year 2007. The Sui deep well was drilled down to 4,713 meters and gas was discovered in Pab sandstone formation in 1999.

Sui Field Gas Compressor Station

There were times when the gas with natural pressure of gas at 80 bars could have been produced and supplied. But as the consumption of natural gas increased manifold the pressure has gradually depleted to a level of 30 bars.

Sui Gas Purification Plant

Gas Purification Plant (GPP) consists of eight Gas Purification Banks and six Dehydration Units with total gas purification capacity of 1000 MMscfd.

Two Dehydration units for the removal of moisture content from the natural gas using TEG were installed in 1978. Prior to this, dehydration was done using desiccant type units. Currently six Dehydration Units are installed with a capacity of 165 MMscfd each (Total 990MMCFD)

In addition, the Plant has in-house integrated facility comprising of Steam Generation, Power Generation, Raw Water Storage, Water Treatment (both softener & demineralization units), Air Compressors for instrument air and Laboratory for Quality Control.

In order to increase plant reliability and ensure process optimization, major revamping of Instrumentation & Control at the Plant has been taken in-hand. On completion, all pneumatic control system shall be transferred to electronic (DCS) along with field and control room instrumentation which is state of art technology.

Similar revamping activities are in progress for replacement of pneumatic control system to electronic for the boilers train as well.

Some Key Features

•It has been a source of energy for manufacturing plants, power generation, agriculture, and the family kitchen.

•Gas from Sui is also used as feedstock for the manufacture of fertilizer and other chemicals. It is used for almost all purposes for which natural gas could possibly be used.

•Today Sui gas is available in all the four provinces.
