Annotation or definition

What are pests?
A pest is any organism that spreads disease, causes destruction or is otherwise a nuisance. Some examples of pests are mosquitoes, rodents, and weeds. Not all insects are pests. Many different kinds of insects eat other insects and are beneficial species. Examples of beneficial insects are dragonflies (which feed mainly on mosquitoes) and lady beetles (which eat aphids, scale insects, mites, and other insects).

How many different types of insects are there?
There are over a million different species of insects known to scientists. About 2,000 new species of insects are discovered each year!
How many different kinds of insects can you name?

What is Pest Control?
Pest control refers to the regulation or management of a species defined as a pest, usually because it is perceived to be detrimental to a person's health, the ecology or the economy.

Pest control is the process of minimizing or removing a wide range of undesirable insects and other pests from spaces occupied by people. The actual process can take place in the home, in a place of business, or in a public building. Controlling pests normally involves using some type of insecticide to prevent them from entering the space, and to kill any pests that have already established a presence within the space.

Many homeowners choose to manage pest control on their own. This process often includes a combination of strategies designed to make the space less desirable to roaches, bed bugs and other types of pests. Along with keeping the home clean and thus minimizing the potential for providing food for pests such as rats or mice, homeowners will often make use of over the counter products to kill any invaders into the living space. Along with commercial products, some people prefer to use time-honored methods of preparing anti-pest compounds using natural ingredients.

It is not unusual for homeowners, businesses, and municipalities to employ the services of a pest control service. Along with dealing with the usual pests that may seek food and shelter within the building, professional exterminators can also address the presence of pests that could cause serious structural damage to the property. For example, a pest control service is highly likely to deal with termites and ants that can infest the building and the surrounding landscape of the property and ultimately cost the property owner a great deal of money in repairs and replacement of buildings.

People often make use of both individual as well as professional efforts to maintain a pest-free environment. This often means keeping the space clean and uncluttered and making sure there are no cracks or crevices to allow easy access from outside. To compliment these efforts, an exterminator is contracted to come in and treat the space on some type of continuing basis, such as once a month.

The ultimate goal of all forms of pest control is to remove mice, roaches, termites and other types of pests from areas where human beings live, work, and play. Along with minimizing the chances for structural damage, pest eradication efforts also can reduce the chances of humans contracting diseases that are sometimes spread by various types of vermin. Pest control also is a comfort to people who are uncomfortable or have some type of phobia associated with different pests, in that consistent measures make it rare for these people to have to endure coming into contact with the pests.

What is IPM?
IPM stands for Integrated Pest Management. IPM is the idea of using several different methods to control pests. Using chemicals, such as pesticides, is only a small part of the bigger picture. IPM incorporates the use of such tools as insect predators, new plant varieties, and recommended farming practices to help control pest populations.

When should pesticides be used to help control pest problems?
Pesticides should not always be used the first time you see a pest. Sometimes pest problems may clear up on their own due to environmental factors and natural control. However, when the cost to repair damage done by pests exceeds the cost to control the pests, or if pest control is critical, pesticides should be considered as a possible solution.

Can I use any pesticide anywhere I want to?
No, it is illegal to use pesticides in a manner contrary to label directions. There are specific pesticides designed for use inside of homes and others for outside of homes or for specific sites. Before applying any pesticide read the label to find out the correct use of the pesticide. Misapplying pesticides can lead to injury or serious problems!

What can I do to help make sure pesticides are being used safely?
There are several things you can to do help ensure that pesticides are being used correctly. Here are some suggestions:
-Check to make sure that anyone who comes to your home to apply pesticides has a license to do so. License checks can be made on our web site: http://www.flaes.org

-Talk to your parents about pesticides and remind them to keep them out of the hands of children.

-If you see any misuse of pesticides, report it to the proper authority. The telephone number to call is on the back of this brochure.

How do you diagnose bed bugs on a human being?
A specific physician has to do this if an individual has problems like:
Itching of the human body
Itching with red bites on the human body
Itching with uncomfortable sleep
Itching with rust spots on bedsheets

If these symptoms and signs are not on the human body, do not diagnose the individual with bed bugs.

How do you detect bed bugs in some corner or location of the building?
Specific questions must be answered regarding the number of bed bugs per square inch and number of total bed bugs in the room or location. Using canines to smell and then placing a torch without answering the relevant questions cannot lead to a scientific conclusion.

What should be accomplished if a person does not have any symptoms or signs of bed bugs, such as itching of the human body, itching with red bites on the human body, itching with uncomfortable sleep, and/or itching with rust spots on bedsheets?
Do nothing about this issue at this point.

Cockroaches
How to eliminate cockroaches

1.Clean, clean and clean again. As with most household pests, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

1 Flashlight

When considering what cockroach control method to use, it is best to first examine your home for possible roach infestation sites. Do this by using a flashlight to search popular roach hiding spots, including behind the refrigerator, under the sink, crevices in cabinets and shelves, closet door corners, bathroom cabinets and closets. Next, choose your weapon:

2 Glue strips

Use roach glue strips to locate large infestations. Based on your flashlight inspection, decide on the most strategic areas to place strips. Monitor those areas for a few days to a week. Strips in high-traffic areas will catch the most roaches, and these areas will need the most treatment.

3 Caulk gaps

Traps can be effective in reducing existing roach populations, but they won’t get rid of roaches on the outside trying to break in. To prevent a roach infestation from expanding, use caulk to fill possible entry points, including gaps between walls or tile, small crevices and entry holes. It will also help to use weather stripping on doors and window seals.

4 Gel bait

Gel bait can be an effective roach killer. Gel bait usually comes in the form of a tube and can be applied under baseboards, in cracks and crevices, and near areas that are most likely to attract roaches. While gel bait can be effective in getting rid of roaches, it can also result in a number of dead roaches lying around your home.

5 Raid (insecticide)

What is in a can of Raid?
Raid derivatives aimed at particular invertebrate species can contain other active agents such as the more toxic cyfluthrin, another synthetic pyrethroid. Currently Raid uses, Tetramethrin, Cypermethrin and Imiprothrin to kill insects. Raid Flying Insect Killer, a spray, uses Prallethrin and D-Phenothrin.

What chemicals are in Raid bug spray?
Currently Raid Ant & Roach Killer contains pyrethroids, piperonyl butoxide, and permethrin; other products contain tetramethrin, cypermethrin and imiprothrin as active ingredients [citation needed]. Raid Flying Insect Killer, a spray, uses prallethrin and D-phenothrin.

What is pesticide poisoning?
A pesticide poisoning occurs when chemicals intended to control a pest affect non-target organisms such as humans, wildlife, or bees. There are three types of pesticide poisoning.

The first of the three is a single and short-term very high level of exposure which can be experienced by individuals who commit suicide, as well as pesticide formulators. The second type of poisoning is long-term high-level exposure, which can occur in pesticide formulators and manufacturers. The third type of poisoning is a long-term low-level exposure, which individuals are exposed to from sources such as pesticide residues in food as well as contact with pesticide residues in the air, water, soil, sediment, food materials, plants and animals.[1][2][

6Boric acid powder

Boric acid, a substance found in products like clothing detergent and toothpaste, can be one of the best roach killers. Unfortunately, it is also easily misapplied and subject to displacement by air currents, sending the material into areas where children and pets can come into contact with it. Made by chemically combining boron and water, boric acid is low in toxicity to people and pets but deadly to cockroaches. When used incorrectly, boric acid will lose effectiveness and is not typically recommended as the sole method for getting rid of cockroaches.

Beavers destroy trees
Gophers, groundhogs, and moles destroy lawns
Feral cats and feral dogs eat human food and carry disease
White-tailed deer are now seen as pests in many suburban and exurban areas of the US, though not in more rural areas.
Coyotes and wolves prey upon livestock
Vampire bats drink blood of livestock.
Eastern grey squirrels are seen as pests in Britain and Ireland because of the decline of red squirrel populations

Prevention of harms during extermination
If all 160 units are exterminated, than exterminating my unit is justified.
If only my unit is singled out repeatedly, I feel these are intentional harms.

How can harms be prevented under the pretext of extermination of building units?
Here is an example.
Extermination notice should look like this.
There are 160 units in the building.
On the mentioned day, all 160 units will be exterminated; your unit is one of them.
This is to clarify that not only one person or a few individuals are being victimized.

How should extermination notice look if there are no bugs in the unit?
It has been discovered that there are no bugs in the unit.
Extermination has been deferred for one year.
If you detect bugs before one year, ask for extermination.

What should happen before, during, and after a housekeeping inspection?
Before a housekeeping inspection, a case manager and another individual come up to verify if everything is excellent.
During the inspection, the same individual with others verify the finding of excellent.
There is no reason to get fair or poor findings after getting excellent findings before and during an inspection unless there is prejudice.

What should happen if any resident’s housekeeping rating is not excellent?
Those who get fair or poor get a specific time frame to rectify the finding, with follow-up inspection.
Notice of Termination of housing if a specific housekeeping unit is not excellent is human rights violation. There can be many medical and nonmedical reason housekeeping is not excellent because the occupant needs help or assistance.
Assistance must be giving to those who have fair or poor findings during a housekeeping inspection rather than a human rights violation or threat to termination of housing.
Human rights issues must be deliberated regularly.

How should rating be done during a housekeeping inspection?
10 points rating.
One point for each issue.
Fewer than 3 points out of 10 should be considered as failure of housekeeping inspection. 3–5 fair.

Warning a resident that failure to have excellent housekeeping will lead to termination of housing is abusive communication.
There are many medical reasons why a resident may not have excellent housekeeping.
Such a situation needs help, not abuse and further harms.

This is relevant to other residents.
Those who get fair or poor, or fail because of medical or nonmedical reasons, should get help to get excellent.
Abusive notice of Losing housing due to not getting excellent in housing inspection is unreasonable and a human rights violation.
On April 23, 2015, at 2PM, after discussion, one case manager at resident services agreed with these facts. Abusive notice of losing housing due to not getting excellent in housing inspection is unreasonable and a human rights violation. An updated letter needs to be issues with these facts.

What locations are best kept in the unit?

Questions the resident needs to answer.

Was housekeeping inspection on mentioned day, date, time, and location done in a fair manner without any prejudice?
Yes/No.

What do you think needs to be improved by those doing the housekeeping inspection?
Case manager with others should do one inspection prior to the day, date, and location of inspection and suggest improvements.
There should be no prejudice during the housekeeping inspection.
The letter of housekeeping inspection reflects abusive communication that needs to be changed to pleasant words. For example, saying that if the resident does not come up with excellent findings, this will lead to termination of housing of resident reflects abusive communication, with intention of human rights violation.
The housekeeping inspection was fair.
